Caelan Doris Included in Ireland Selection But McCarthy Left Out
Returning manager Andy Farrell has named captain Doris in his Irish team for the autumn Tests, however lock McCarthy misses out.
Doris, who has not played since having shoulder surgery in early May, has come back to Leinster training, with doubts lingering whether he will be fit to play against the All Blacks in Chicago on 1 November.
Second row Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot injury he sustained during the first British and Irish Lions Test against Australia in July.
Ulster player Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster wing Calvin Nash also miss out because of injury, while number 15 Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing hip surgery following the Lions tour.
Dublin province prop Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole uncapped member in the 34-player squad, but Irish rugby authorities says new Munster pair Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped western province winger Shayne Bolton will travel to the US as "cover".
Following playing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a repeat of their 2016 encounter, Ireland host the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world title holders South Africa in Dublin.
"There's an exciting look to the squad and it's a chance for the veteran members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to Georgia and Portugal," said the coach, who returns to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to coach the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.
In a mostly familiar-looking selection, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will once again vie for the first-choice fly-half position. The fly-half role is still available, with the two players set to face off for the first occasion in the upcoming URC game at the Dublin venue.
Ciaran Frawley is the third fly-half selected as Farrell deciding not to selecting Leinster's Byrne.
At scrum-half, Farrell has selected British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer international wins over Georgia and the Lobos. There is also a return for Connacht's Caolin Blade, chosen to club-mate Ben Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an experienced cohort of midfield choices. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, though the youngster is also a leading candidate to cover for the full-back at number 15.
Outside backs James Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are named. O'Brien shone on his first Ireland outings during the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.
McCarthy is the only fresh name in the Ireland pack. The front rower has started a couple of his province's URC league games so far and played in Ireland A's defeat by the English in Bristol previously.
The 22-year-old was selected in interim boss O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not receive a cap.
Southern province second row Thomas Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those matches, is kept in the squad, while experienced Northern province second row Henderson is back after sitting out the summer matches.
Jack Conan, who started all three Lions Tests during the tour, is poised to cover for Doris if the captain does not regain fitness in time to play the All Blacks.
The Ireland squad will assemble in Dublin on Monday before traveling to Chicago on Tuesday.
