Fireworks along with a Cheer for Life: Israelis Rejoice at Deal Bringing Back Captives
The declaration regarding a deal projected to lead to the freeing of hostages detained in the Gaza Strip for over 24 months has caused delight and comfort across Israel.
An organization which has campaigned for the return of Israeli captives in Gaza voiced “deep appreciation” for what it called a “landmark achievement”.
The agreement—still requiring agreed upon the Israeli war cabinet—involves the return of 20 living hostages and the bodies of 28 dead hostages in exchange for 250 Palestinian prisoners imprisoned for life in Israeli prisons and 1,700 detainees from the Gaza region.
So far, 148 captives have been returned—most as part of previous ceasefire deals—51 bodies have been retrieved while eight hostages were freed by rescue.
Jubilant Scenes at Hostages Square
Joyous gatherings took place in Hostages’ Square located in Tel Aviv with crowds of individuals gathered ahead of the agreement’s signing.
The gathering started applauding and moving to music beneath US and Israeli flags—one woman holding up a placard saying: “We love Trump.”
“This is a wondrous day,” she expressed.
Another, 50-year-old Yael, wept as she watched the crowd dancing.
“I am thrilled—it is such a comfort,” she said. “We must witness their return home to their families.”

Relatives Rejoice Using Pyrotechnics
The mom and sibling of a captive Israeli Matan Zangauker lit fireworks in celebration of the announcement that he would be returned home.
“They are returning!... Matan is on his way home!” Einav Zangauker exclaimed as she held her daughter.
Viki Cohen, the mother of Israeli hostage Nimrod Cohen, shared online: “My child, you are coming home.”
The joy was palpable in the streets of Tel Aviv after the announcement.
Freed Hostages Say Prayers and Toasts
Former British-Israeli hostage Emily Damari celebrated with another freed hostage Romi Gonen, reciting prayers of thankfulness, then toasting “To life”, meaning “for life”. She has advocated for the freedom of her friends, twins Gali and Ziv Berman.
Their brother Liran Berman wrote: “My dear Gali and Ziv, I adore you. You are coming back.”
Gil Dickman’s cousin Carmel Gat was captured on 7 October 2023, with her remains recovered from a tunnel in Gaza nearly a year after. He has been joining other hostage families in pushing for a deal which ensures the return of all those still detained in Gaza.
“I hardly believe this is real. We’ve been waiting for so long and here it is,” he expressed.
He said he was “broken” that Carmel will not be among those returning to their homes but was “radiant with happiness” for the relatives of the hostages who are at last returning.
Eitan Horn was seized from kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel together with his sibling.
Cautious Optimism from Relatives
Dalia Cusnir, whose brother-in-law Eitan Horn remains captive in Gaza, said she felt as if she were in “a dream state”.
“We’re more than grateful to the President and all he has done on our behalf. It seems that this could be the beginning of the end of this ordeal, and hugging Eitan feels closer than ever,” she said.
But she cautioned that it remained too early to rejoice.
“Before the final captive is here, we’re not opening the champagne. We’re going to keep fighting... until it’s over,” she affirmed.
“Numerous events might occur up to the final instant which is why we are extremely cautious. We simply wish to express gratitude to all who participated in the efforts and ensure this agreement is done... We will celebrate only when we have the last hostage safely home.”
Eitan was captured from Nir Oz kibbutz in Israel’s south together with his sibling Iair, who was released from captivity in a ceasefire deal earlier this year.
