From Solo Parent Vacation Nightmare to Pet-Sitting Heaven: A Mother's Transformation

Following my marriage concluded, I believed holidays as a single parent would be straightforward. I soon realized they proved either extremely expensive, or appeared only suitable for “traditional” families, or else were far too budget that I came home more knackered than when I started.

Initial Vacation Attempts

My first endeavor, tenting with friends, was fine until I had to pack up our shelter. Hours of struggling with it in the heat afterward, I developed a dislike for camping. Next, an adventurous holiday for single-parent families. The abseiling and exploring caves were brilliant, but resting in a bunk bed ruined my back. We attempted a budget package in Tenerife, but the crowds of traditional families were overwhelming, and pool-side conversations with fellow ladies died down because I wasn’t come with a handy husband for their spouses to chat with. An excursion to Mallorca alongside a pal and her kids was wonderful, but the cost was eye-watering.

Finding House-Sitting

Then, last autumn, an acquaintance inquired if we’d look after her pets within the county while she attended to a wedding. During a peaceful couple of days, we strolled on the beach, and curled up by the fire in the evening. This prompted to house-sitting for her associate in the region, and it also went smoothly. Encouraged, I subscribed with an annual £99 membership to join a house-sitting platform, through which, by caring for people’s animals, you stay at their residences free of charge. In just a couple of days, I’d arranged a ten-day house-sit within the county, caring for a labrador called Buzz while his owners were abroad.

Each day's walks provided the opportunity to discover breathtaking nature spots.

This marked our first assignment for unknown individuals, but all anxiety dissipated the moment we reached at the gorgeous four-bedroom home and encountered the calm Buzz, who thrived for belly scratches. Each day's canine strolls offered us the possibility to explore stunning nature spots, and, after we came home, we were able to relax outdoors for important discussions about our favourite “Ghosts” characters in the television series. There were any pricey tourist traps to wander around – instead, we perused bookshops, indulged to manicures, and went on paddling excursions. I experienced more carefree and happier than I had for a long time, and noticed my bond alongside my child Polly strengthen daily. I’m not afraid to say that I cried with happiness. Life seemed achievable again.

Is Pet-Sitting for You?

Pet-sitting may not be for everyone. Certain individuals want zero duties on holiday apart from choosing their upcoming beverage, aren’t fond of pets, or perhaps find it strange about sleeping in a stranger’s bedroom, clearing their dishwasher, and putting out the trash. However the soothing pace of ordinary life, with work removed and new places to investigate, suits me for me.

This prevents myself from descending into complete idleness, which leaves me experience restless and strangely hollow. Moreover, monetarily, pet-sitting is a life-saver for a solo mother. A 10-day break in a comparable property within the identical region we stayed would set me approximately £2,500 via rental platforms.

An Alternative Perspective

As for staying in a another person’s house, I found it enriching. Even though house-sitting represents a transaction, it is equally an act of trust among strangers and animals, that has unleashed the finest version of me – my patient, caring and measured aspect, full of gratitude for the people and places we encounter. I have scheduled another four days off, looking after a sighthound in leafy Surrey, and, next year, I’d like to attempt house-sitting overseas. Due to a bit of creative thinking, we can see the world from the comfort of a home – it just turns out to be another person’s.
