This Creepy Thriller
The director's contained scarefest remains effective despite the lack of a sequel. Set in the late 70s in Denver, several disappearances has made the local kids on edge. After Finney gets captured by “the Grabber” and locked up in a basement, he fears a terrible outcome. However, the old telephone mounted nearby continues to ring, with ghostly voices offering help, while the prescient dreams from his sibling Gwen might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. This Dramatic Portrait
In the conflict between faith and wealth, the winner is obvious for greed in Showalter's wonderfully garish biopic regarding the shamed religious broadcaster and her criminal husband. Garfield plays the venal Jim, who proclaims at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. He and Tammy Faye begin capitalizing on the people's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of bad interior design, bad makeup and hypocrisy, though Jessica Chastain succeeds to depict the character with compassion. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, Film4
